ROB, MY BAD-A$$ ASSISTANT

Posted by: davidejackson at 6:55 pm

We always manage to do the STRANGEST things when we shooting weddings. And yes, this is Rob. At a wedding. At the reception. In a tuxedo. With road flares.

This woulda made for a good Halloween post, but I have something better in store..

Happy trails.

ROB, MY BAD-A$$ ASSISTANT

Well, I’m finally back home. After roughly 30+ hours of shooting (with very little sleep in between) at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, Rob and I landed with our feet on the ground in Appleton late last night. We had a blast shooting the project and I can firmly say, that commercial, editorial and promotional work is a direction in which I have a deep passion.

On our last day at the college, we were given a much needed two-hour lunch break. With sore feet and blurry eyes, we made our way to Main Street in downtown Dubuque to round up some grub. We had a hankering for Chinese all day. We decided on hitting the Yen Ching Restaurant. While wandering from the car to get food, we came across this very eclectic old fashion barber shop. I commented to Rob that I wanted to shoot there. And oddly enough, Rob was in desperate need of a haircut.

When we finished our lunch (which by the way, was awesome food), we poked our heads into Fred’s Barber Shop. There was Fred Hentges, reading a newspaper. It was like walking into the 50′s. Narrow, musty and old, the shop came alive with vibrant character. We chatted with Fred for a short bit before I asked him if I could shoot a few portraits of him. He obliged.

While Rob negotiated the $11.00 haircut, I ran out to the truck to grab my camera, a softbox, a 580EX II and a gaggle of Pocket Wizards. After a few minutes of talking and visiting with two locals who strolled in for haircuts, we shot some editorial portraits. The joint has been a barber shop since the early 1940′s and has basically been left as-is ever since. Fred has owned the shop for the past 28 years. It was so awesome to see a small business owner, thriving and surviving off of regular customers for so long. Regardless of the Fred’s tiny old shop, his ideals reinstilled hope in the “little guy” business philosphy in today’s difficult economy.

Thank you Fred.

We had a senior no-show tonight, so I shot of few photos of Adam:
